Clyde Lake Trail, Kamas Utah: Thursday, June 04, 2009

Decided to take a hike today, even though the forecast wasn't so great (I've been itching to get out in the backcountry, so I decided just to take my chances).  I haven't been over to the area around Kamas, Utah, yet, where there are tons and tons of alpine lakes, high mountains, and peaks that are snow-covered year round.  Unfortunately, I misjudged the timing -- the Uinta Mountains are so high, that the taller peaks are only hike-able in July and August, and there was still too much snow (in early June, mind you) for me to do any summit hiking.

Thus, I headed out for a "level" hike to Clyde Lake and Crystal Lake.  There are literally hundreds of little alpine lakes in this region, and they're all famous for fishing.  However, the hiking is pretty cool too.  The weather did turn foul on me, and I had to abandon my trip, but I did take a few pix which I will share with you.  Hope you enjoy.

Educational Moment:  The Uinta Mountains are a high chain of mountains in northeastern Utah and extreme northwestern Colorado. A sub-range of the Rocky Mountains, they are unusual for being the highest range in the contiguous United States running east to west, and lie approximately 100 miles east of Salt Lake City.  The peaks range in height from 11,000-13,500 ft, with the highest being King's Peak at 13,528 ft, the highest point in Utah. The famous Mirror Lake Highway crosses the western half of the Uintas on its way to Wyoming.
