Vedauwoo Wilderness, Wyoming: Thursday, January 01, 2009

On the way home from Christmas vacation in Atlanta, Jesse and I decided to stop and visit the Vedauwoo Wilderness in Wyoming (about midway between Cheyenne and Laramie).  You can see a little of the rock formations from the highway, so we just decided to explore.  We had Brandis and Tika (the labs) with us, as well as Paco (the pug), and they really had a blast.

Known to the Arapaho Indians as “Land of the Earthborn Spirit,” the rock formations of Vedauwoo (pronounced vee-da-voo) are really kind of surreal.  The wind-carved shapes are fantastical, and the panoramic views are kind of amazing.  They are part of the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest and its more than two million acres of public lands.

We couldn't stay long, because of the INTENSE cold.  It was only 8 degrees that day, and the wind was hard and steady (as it ALWAYS is in southern Wyoming -- sometimes they have to close I-80 because of wind), so after a bit of exploring we had to run for the car to thaw.  I hope to go back there someday and explore when the weather isn't literally dangerous, it seems like such a cool place.  We didn't take too many pix (too cold!), but I'll share with you what we did take.  At the end, I am including some pictures from other photographers to give you a better overall feel for the place.  Can you spot the tiny people in some of these pictures?  (the scale may surprise you!)
