Elbow Fork Trail, Mill Creek Canyon, Utah: Thursday, May 21, 2009

A beautiful day, so Jesse and I grabbed the pugs (Paco and Rudy) and headed up Mill Creek Canyon (out of the Salt Lake Valley) to the Elbow Fork Trail.  This is a flat, easy walking trail with a beginning elevation of 6,240 feet and a gradual elevation gain of only 1,020 feet.  The trail passes through dense groves of oak, sycamore, pine, and aspen, and wildflowers are everywhere!

This is a great trail (only about 2-3 miles) for just getting away for a little while, and it's less than 10 minutes from our driveway to the trailhead.  The boys (all 3) loved it, and if my family EVER comes and visits I intend to introduce them to the Wasatch Front along this trail (before I REALLY make them work to see some vistas!)

Educational Moment:  Salt Lake Valley is a 500-square-mile valley in Salt Lake County in the north-central portion of Utah.  It contains Salt Lake City and many of its suburbs, including Sugarhouse, West Valley City, Murray, Sandy, Midvale, and West Jordan. The total population is 948,172 as of 2005.  The valley is surrounded in every direction except the northwest by steep mountains that at some points rise 7,100 feet from the valley floor's base elevation. It lies nearly encircled by the Wasatch Mountains on the east, the Oquirrh Mountains on the west, Traverse Ridge to the south and the Great Salt Lake on the northwest, with the peaks of  Antelope Island visible.
